Happenings and miscellany

The writing’s on the wall: or the blackboard, as the case may be

This semester, I am reprising my survey on creative writing class, “Creative Writing: For the Writer in Each of Us.” The class is geared toward anyone who has an interest in writing, of any genre, or all genres, or none of them. In past semesters, we have had both short and long fiction writers, memoirists, poets, a dramaturg or two and some truly excellent hybrid writers who played with all kinds of exciting forms.

Our basic premise is this: we spend half the class learning and talking about an aspect of craft. That can range from the basics (plot, narrative arc, setting, etc.) to the nuanced differences between perspective and point of view, how to use static elements as characters, or how to integrate the setting into the narrative to make place and time work to further the story. We read excerpts from both modern and classical literature, sampling all genres and forms, to see how these “building blocks” work for us, no matter how we’re using them. After we all have a good handle on our toolbox, we spend the second half of the class writing and workshopping what we’re writing. Our focus is always on constructive, cohesive feedback that will help each other’s work grow and become the best it can be, whatever that means for the individual writer. Feedback is only as useful to the extent it is heard and received; we make sure it is both.

Are you a writer in the Buffalo area who wants to learn more about craft or enjoy the inspirational fellowship of other writers, with the chance to work on your own writing and help others hone theirs? You can sign up for the class here at the start of each semester.

Past classes and instruction have included an introduction to creative writing, an intensive memoir seminar and private consultation on manuscripts of both a creative and professional nature. I have also tutored high school students in SAT English and Writing preparation, and am available for both individual and group consultation.
